The History of Tiruppur: From a Small Town to a Thriving District

History of Tiruppur: known as the “Knitwear Capital of India,” has a rich history that reflects its rapid growth and transformation. Over the years, it has evolved from a small town into a major industrial hub. Today, it stands as one of the most significant textile manufacturing centers in the country, contributing immensely to India’s economy.

Formation of Tiruppur District

During the 1990s, Tiruppur experienced a massive rise in textile exports. However, the city’s infrastructure and amenities were not enough to support this rapid expansion. The people of Tiruppur, especially industrialists and entrepreneurs, demanded a separate district to improve governance and meet the needs of the growing population.

Recognizing these demands, the Hon’ble Chief Minister agreed to the formation of a new district. Later, the Hon’ble Finance Minister announced in the assembly that Tiruppur would officially become a separate district. The Tamil Nadu Government issued orders (G.O.Ms.No.617 and 618, Revenue [R.A.1(1)] Department) on October 24, 2008, reorganizing Coimbatore and Erode Districts into three districts: Coimbatore, Erode, and Tiruppur.

Finally, on February 22, 2009, Tiruppur District was officially inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Rural Development. This move brought administrative services closer to the people and boosted industrial and economic growth.
